KUNG FU: Debutant claims UK gold

JUNIOR Kung Fu stars from Enfield claimed five medals at the United Kingdom Junior Kung Fu Championships.

Top performance of the day came from Stephanie Anstey in the girls' under-66kg light contact category.

The 16-year-old, who attends Goff School, in Cheshunt, claimed gold - leaving her stunned.

She said: "It was my first competition and taking gold home was unbelievable."

Jubilant coach Sifu Anthony Roberts added: "The volume of punches and kicks and keeping it simple overwhelmed her opponent."

Fellow T'ai Tsung members also added to the medal haul.

Nine year-old Oakthorpe School pupil Maia Wallace-Loizou won silver in the girls' under-36kg section for nine to 11-year-olds.

Sophie Healy, aged 14, who attends Lea Valley School, in Enfield, won silver in the girls' under-47kg class.

And a silver was also awarded to eight-year-old Bradley Harewood, from Enfield.

He swept his opponent on to the floor three times which led the referee stopping the bout.

Former national junior champion Christopher Manning won bronze in the 14 to 16-year-olds category, bringing the total of medals won by the Enfield competitors to five.

The competition was organised by The British Council for Chinese Martial Arts and was held at Mote Park, in Maidstone, Kent.
