MIDDLESEX lost by five wickets to Surrey in their Friends Provident Trophy match at Lord's yesterday.

They recovered from losing their first three wickets with under ten runs on the board to make 233-8 from their 50 overs.

But thanks to a century from James Benning, the Brown Caps claimed victory with five wickets and three overs to spare.

After Ed Joyce (1), Owais Shah (1) and Ed Smith (2) all fell cheaply, and England batsman Andrew Strauss only making 13, an impressive knock of 65 by South Africa Gareth Berg helped them recover.

And with Ben Scott (52) and Tim Murtagh (35no), who received his county cap during the tea interval, adding useful knocks, the home side set a competitive total.

However, with England hopeful Benning smashing 106 from just 84 balls, Surrey always looked favourites for victory. And when Benning was finally out, an unbeaten knock of 40 from veteran Ali Brown helped them secure victory.

Today Middlesex are away to Sussex in another Friends Provident Trophy match.
