Enfield’s good start to the Middlesex League Division Two season suffered a setback on Saturday as they sustained a first loss of the campaign against Harrow St Marys.

After losing a crucial toss, Enfield were sent into bat on a wicket highly conducive to seam bowling. Their opponents bowled well as a unit to dismiss Enfield for 150, with only Jack Plumb (35) and Sam Smyth (35) able to offer any prolonged resistance.

As the sun shone conditions gradually became easier for batting and, despite some accurate bowling from Tom Bolt (0-24), Dan Amedee (1-36) and Les Edwards (2-16), St Marys were able to inch over the winning line for the loss of five wickets with eight balls to spare.

The only small positive for the hosts was they managed to secure two bonus points in a losing cause.

The following day Enfield visited Premier League side Finchley in the third round of the National Club Championship.

Batting first, Enfield posted 210-9 in their allotted 40 overs, with the biggest contributions from Rehan Hassan (60), Ayush Sahota (55) and captain Kyal Bacchus-Brown (31).

The game was evenly poised as Patrick Blair (0-24) and Edwards (3-39) kept things tight early on but Finchley’s Rahul Wijeratne made a whirlwind 90 from 67 deliveries that turned the game in favour of the home team, who reached 211-6 with 10 balls to spare.

A century from captain De La Rey Terblanche helped Winchmore Hill to a convincing second Division Two league victory of the season at the expense of Eastcote.

The skipper’s unbeaten 103, along with 42 from Mitchell Todd and Sam Weller’s 32, were the significant scores as Hill posted 247-7 from their 45 overs.

Eastcote’s reply got off to a solid start as they reached 78 before the second wicket went down, but Hill then took control and bowled their opponents out for 142 to wrap up a 105-run win.

Todd was also in good form with the ball, taking 5-30 from his nine overs, while Jim Gatting (2-27) and Jack Irwin (2-16) weighed in with two wickets each.

Neil Watts showed his teammates higher up the order how it should be done with a fine batting display to fire Southgate Adelaide to a dramatic victory that had looked highly improbable for the most part.

Set a target of 216-9 by Wheathampstead in their Herts League Division Three B clash, Adelaide looked to be heading for a first league defeat of the season when they slumped to 69-6.

A stand of 66 between Watts and Liam Farrell (32) offered Southgate encouragement, but when Connor Johnson (6) was the next man out with the score on 151 the odds remained firmly stacked in Wheathampstead’s favour.

But that was as good as it was to get for the visitors as Watts (85 not out) compiled an undefeated 66-run ninth-wicket alliance with Anthony Morris (19 not out) to see his side over the finishing line with a ball to spare.
