The Enfield Ignatians second team ended the season on a high by lording the Herts-Middlesex Merit Table Two plate final 40-10 as Weston were run ragged at times on the Bramley Road stage on Saturday.

At their most effective in the first period, Ignatians weathered an early storm before clicking into gear and fashioning a 26-0 half-time lead after Erin Dottin-Wilson, Seyi Adeosun, Frazer Briers and Ray Hayes all crossed.

The second half began in a similar fashion to the first with a slow start, although this time Weston prospered in the early stages as an effective dart from the scrum-half set up the right winger for a try.

Ignatians then had a try disallowed for a forward pass before adding a fifth after man of the match Briers crowned a stellar performance by showing impressive pace to run in from halfway.

Briers was part of an outstanding colts’ contingent which excelled in the high octane atmosphere, and another, Anzl Schwartz, having set up Hayes in the first half, dummied his way over for the sixth and final try.

Two other colts, Jack O’Toole (4) and Calum Middleton (1), landed five conversions,

Weston claimed a try in the final minute but it was only a consolation.

Team spokesman Paul Duke said after the win: “The boys were conscious of the massive occasion and, although we had to make a couple of late changes, it was nothing which was detrimental to the team.

“The attitude of the team at training was first rate and it showed during the game.

“The conditions didn’t suit us and, given the heavy ground, we kept it tight in the first 15 to 20 minutes. To be fair, both teams struggled in the elements.

“We were confident, having beaten Weston twice already in the league, that we could do it again. The tight five, with Jake Baker and Lewis White, who did a lot of the donkey work, both in fine form, helped lay the foundations of victory.

“However, the man of the match award goes to Frazer Briers for his outstanding contribution and two tries.”
