Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino says his players need to prove with performances on the pitch they can catch Chelsea and win the Premier League title.

Spurs consolidated second place in the table and closed the gap to Antonio Conte's league leaders to seven points with an impressive 3-2 win over in-form Everton at White Hart Lane.

The Blues can extend their lead to 10 points if they beat West Ham in tomorrow’s Monday night fixture, but Pochettino says his team needs make sure they are in the mix if Chelsea slip up.

Pochettino said: “The most important thing they need to do is show on the pitch that we believe [we can catch Chelsea] and I think we showed that today.

“More than talk about it off the pitch, it is better that the team show it with that kind of performance and show that they believe.”

“We need to be there, I have said before that it is not up to us but it is up to us to be there if they fail.”

Spurs survived a late scare during a frantic period of injury time at the end of the game, where both sides scored.

Harry Kane has already put his side two up when Romelu Lukaku pulled one back for the visitors with 10 minutes to play.

Dele Alli thought he had put the game beyond doubt in injury time when he latched onto Harry Winks’s free kick, but Enner Valencia scored almost immediately after the restart to take the match down to the wire.

Pochettino added: “I think it was very important for us to get three points today and keep our second place in the table

“But now we have to try to prepare and focus on the next game, and that is Millwall here in the FA Cup which is another competition where we want to go as far as possible.”

Tottenham will now turn their attention to their all-London FA Cup quarter final clash with the Lions next Sunday, before they host Southampton in the league the following week.
