Harry Kane scored twice as Tottenham survived a late scare to end Everton’s nine-game unbeaten Premier League run.

The Toffees had not lost in the league since December 19 last year, but were in all truth second best as Spurs ran rampant for most of the afternoon.

Kane opened the scoring early on at White Hart Lane through a superb long range strike.

The England striker, who now has eight goals in his last four games and 19 so far in the league this season, then added a side-footed second after the break.

Romelu Lukaku grabbed a goal back for the visitors late-on to set up a nervy final few minutes.

Dele Alli thought he had secured the points with a third goal in stoppage time, but Enner Valencia popped up seconds later at the other end to ensure the contest went down to the wire.

The win consolidates second place in the Premier League table for Mauricio Pochettino’s side and closes the gap at the top to seven points, with leaders Chelsea not playing until Monday.

Spurs dominated possession in the early stages and although the visitors looked as if they could threaten on the counter, neither side produced a clear-cut chance in the opening quarter hour.

It was perhaps unsurprising then, when their opener came practically out of the blue.

Kane was allowed to turn 35 yards from goal and, with the Everton defence standing off him, unleashed a powerful long range effort past the outstretched Joel Robles.

Tottenham immediately pressed for a second and Kane almost obliged three minutes later, failing to find a way past the onrushing Robles after a neat one-two with Christian Eriksen.

Victor Wanyama was the next to go close on the half-hour mark, when his deflected shot rattled back off the post.

Spurs continued to press in the second half and Dele Alli should have doubled their lead in the 53rd minute, when he failed to get enough on an excellent cross from Ben Davies.

But it did not take long for Alli to make amends, winning the ball from a dawdling Morgan Schneiderlin 25 yards out and finding in Kane, who tucked home his second of the afternoon four minutes later.

Everton’s Belgian striker Lukaku started the day joint top of the Premier League scoring charts alongside Kane, but had struggled to make an impact throughout the game.

However, the best strikers only need one opportunity and he brought the away side back into the match with ten minutes to play when he turned and fired past Hugo Lloris.

When Dele Alli directed a dinked finish over Robles from Harry Wink’s free kick, it seemed the game was done and dusted.

However, Everton pulled a goal back straight from the restart through Valencia, who tapped home a quickly-taken free kick- to make Spurs see out a nervy final few seconds.

Tottenham will now turn their attention to an all-London FA Cup quarter final clash with Millwall next Sunday, before they host Southampton in the league the following week.
