Two Dele Alli headers helped Tottenham to an impressive victory over top-of-the-table Chelsea at White Hart Lane, shattering The Blues’ hopes of a record 14th successive Premier League win.

Spurs beat the visitors for just the fifth time in 50 Premier League meetings between the sides, with two Alli goals, both expertly-crated by Christian Eriksen, either side of half time.

The win, played out in an electric atmosphere under the lights at The Lane, lifts Tottenham to third in the table, seven points shy of Chelsea.

The Blues created the first chance of the evening after just four minutes, when Nemanja Matic’s clever ball over the top found Eden Hazard, who dragged his left footed shot wide.

Eriksen opened the scoring with a sublime long-range strike in the corresponding fixture at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season- and he almost replicated the feat in the 23rd minute.

The Dane provided a genuine moment of quality in an opening half hour where both sides lacked a cutting edge, when he flashed a powerful effort inches wide of Thibaut Courtois’s right-hand post.

Both Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino and Chelsea manager Antonio Conte cut frustrated figures as half time approached, but that all changed when Dele Alli put the hosts ahead in stoppage time.

Eriksen floated an enticing cross into the box, where Alli rose above two Chelsea defenders to drive a powerful header home.

Conte sent his players out onto the pitch several minutes before the restart and whatever was said during the break initially appeared to have worked, with the Blues pushing for an equaliser.

Diego Costa stung the palms of Hugo Lloris with a well-hit effort seconds into the second half, before Hazard was unable to prod home Marcos Alonso’s dangerous header across goal shortly after.

With less than 10 minutes played in the second half, Tottenham had doubled their advantage as Eriksen and Alli combined once more.

Eriksen's cross came from an almost identical position to the opener and although this time the delivery was deeper, England midfielder Alli arrived once again to head past Courtois.

After providing two assists, Eriksen came close to grabbing a goal of his own in the 76th minute, when his dipping free kick from 20 yards out sailed narrowly wide.

Chelsea seemed to run out of ideas in the closing stages, and Tottenham were able to see out the game and prevent The Blues beating the league record 13 consecutive wins set by Arsenal in 2002.

Spurs are next tasked with navigating a Third Round FA Cup clash against Aston Villa on Sunday, before they return to Premier League action against West Brom the following weekend.
