Danny Rose has revealed Tottenham players were in tears when they lost the Premier League title last season and says they are desperate to avoid similar disappointment in the Champions League.

Spurs face table-toppers Monaco at the Stade Louis II on Tuesday, with their hopes of qualification from Group E hanging by a thread.

Two defeats at Wembley have left Mauricio Pochettino's men playing catch-up behind second-placed Bayer Leverkusen and they must realistically beat Monaco if they are to avoid an early exit.

Tottenham have only just recovered from their most recent heartache in May, when a 2-2 draw at Chelsea spoiled their title challenge and instead crowned Leicester champions.

Spurs return to Stamford Bridge in the league this weekend but must first set about reviving their fortunes in Europe.

"The feeling after the Chelsea game last season is one that I never want to feel again," Rose said.

"There were people upset, crying in the changing room after that game. It's a feeling that we never want to feel again as a football club.

"I hope everyone has learned from that and we are going to try and push on this season.

"If we don't win, it looks like we are out of the Champions League. We have worked so hard for years and years to get this opportunity.

"We know if we don't win on Tuesday then we are more or less out of the competition so the manager will put out a strong team, I am sure, and we will go out to win that and then again on Saturday against Chelsea."

Tottenham have endured a dip in form of late - their last-gasp win over West Ham on Saturday was their first victory in eight matches - but Rose remains one of Pochettino's most trusted performers.

The 26-year-old is now England's first-choice left-back and has proven wrong those that questioned the club handing him a new contract in 2014, after they had just signed Ben Davies from Swansea.

"I remember what people used to say about me a few years ago - there was a lot of negative comments about me, even when I signed my contract before last," Rose said.

"It wasn't nice but I feel as if I've got a strong character. I tried not to dwell on it too much.

"I have got a great small circle around me in terms of family and close friends and they have helped me massively to try and turn my form around from what it was a few years ago.

"Also the manager coming in and putting his arm around me - giving me confidence and making me feel I could be one of the best in this league and in Europe.

"I don't want to blow my own trumpet but I feel as if I am playing well. I owe my team-mates, my manager, my chairman and everyone at this football club for how I am playing now and how I played last season and how I played the season before that."

Rose is expected to start against Monaco, given also Davies is out with an ankle injury, but he will miss Saturday's grudge match against Chelsea through suspension.

"I'm gutted," Rose said. "I was aware that I was on four bookings before we played Arsenal and I tried my best not to get booked in that game.

"I'm kicking myself because it was so unnecessary and yeah that was the first fixture I looked out for in the summer and I am gutted that I am going to miss it.

"But I'll be there, either travelling with the team or in with the fans, I'll make sure I am there to support the guys."
