Enfield Town secured a 2-1 win over Worthing in the Ryman Isthmian League Premier Division on Saturday in what was a closely-contested encounter.

Goals from Scott Shulton and Billy Crook were enough for the Towners to secure all three points as Nathan McDonald became the hero of the hour.

Town began on the offensive as right from the outset Dernell Wynter found some space in the penalty area but he couldn’t quite set up Harry Ottaway.

But the home side did not have to wait long before they opened the scoring as Ottaway turned provider with a back-heel and Shulton was the first to respond, finding the back of the net on 11 minutes.

The visitors, however, did not give in and the first of a number of dangerous free-kicks from Brannon O’Neill drifted just wide with no attacker available to apply the finishing touch.

Worthing continued to grow into the game and it was from another set piece they were able to punish Town as Jack Cook equalised 10 minutes before the break.

The tables had turned and Worthing looked strong going forward after the break, while Town had to dig deep to ensure they did not concede another.

McDonald had to make a double save early on as he saved one attempt and grabbed hold of the subsequent corner which he took a knock from and required treatment.

Shortly afterwards another O’Neill free-kick rattled the home crossbar with the keeper well beat, while at the other end Bobby Devyne’s shot was tipped around the post by Jack Fagan.

The Towners remained resilient and got their just rewards in the 72nd minute as they grabbed the all-important second goal. Tom Collins fashioned an opening for Crook to roll the ball past Fagan.

Worthing substitute Lloyd Dawes should have equalised once again for Worthing but his shot went well wide.

The victory took Enfield up to seventh in the table while their opponents dropped to 11th.

The win will give Enfield a boost as they take on Southern Premier side Kings Langley in the FA Trophy on Saturday.

The club have also announced changes to four of their fixtures due to their progress in cup competitions, with their league fixture against Lowestoft Town moved to Tuesday, January 10 with a 7.45pm kick-off.

Their Middlesex Senior Cup second round tie at Barnet will now be played on Monday, November 14, kicking off at The Hive at 8pm.

But this match could also be postponed if their Trophy match against Langley ends all-square.

Tonbridge Angels have progressed in the County Cup and they were due to face The Towners on Tuesday, December 6.

A new date has yet to be confirmed for this fixture, while Enfield's New Year’s Eve game at Leiston has been brought forward from 3pm to 1.30pm.
