Enfield Town’s miserable start to the season continued after their 2-0 defeat at Folkestone Invicta on Saturday.

The result leaves the Towners struggling third from bottom of the Ryman Premier Division with one win from their first seven matches.

It means Bradley Quinton’s side have gone more than 400 minutes without scoring a goal stretching back to last month’s win over Kingstonian.

Enfield are also yet claim a point away from home after losing all of their matches this season.

The Towners will not be panicking yet though, as they made an even slower start to last season and nearly reached the play-offs.

The visitors almost got off to the worst possible start when Ian Draycott raced through on goal but Mark Kirby recovered to head the ball back to goalkeeper Nathan McDonald.

Town’s first chance of the game fell to Tom Collins but his near post header was blocked.

At the other end, McDonald was called into action to save Draycott’s free-kick.

The Towners went even closer to a breakthrough from Kirby’s header but goalkeeper Tim Roberts kept out the effort.

McDonald did well to save efforts from Ashley Miller and Draycott. But he could do nothing about the hosts’ opening goal before half-time.

Phil Starkey sent in a dangerous cross and debutant Jonathan Muleba had the misfortune of turning the ball into his own net.

It was a cruel blow for the visitors heading into the break. But Quinton’s side rarely looked like getting an equaliser during the second half of the match.

But the visitors did have the ball in the net after the hour mark through substitute Tyler Campbell. Frustratingly for the Towners the goal was chalked off for offside.

Folkestone extended their lead in the final 20 minutes of the match.

Draycott burst through the defence and fired home to give the hosts a handy cushion with time running out for Enfield.

The final opportunity of the game for Quinton’s side fell to Campbell, but he was off target with his effort.

Folkestone were able to see out the game comfortably to consolidate their position inside the top ten of the division.

But the Towners are only three points off the bottom of the table and will be keen to climb up the league as quickly as possible.

Their next match is at Cheshunt tomorrow night in the Alan Turvey Trophy.

Enfield’s league game against Billericay Town this weekend has been postponed. The club have arranged a home friendly against Thurrock instead for Saturday afternoon.
