Enfield Town were knocked out of the FA Cup as they lost 1-0 to Hanwell Town in the first qualifying round on Saturday.

For the first 20 minutes, Town dominated procession but a combination of poor delivery into the box or poor shooting repeatedly saw their attacks break down.

The closest the away side came to taking the lead was in the 17th minute as a long-range effort from Tyler Campbell was tipped over the bar by Melvin Minter in the hosts’ goal.

In the 21st minute, a free kick 40 yards out was clipped into the Town box and, although the ball was headed clear, Hanwell reacted the quickest.

The ball was played out to Jesse Kewley-Graham on the right wing, he hit a low pass to James Simmonds just inside the area where a clumsy challenge on the player resulted in the referee pointing to the penalty spot.

Dean Allen stepped up and sent Nathan McDonald the wrong way to put Hanwell in front.

A minute later Ricky Gabriel picked up the ball 45 yards from goal and laid the ball off to Mickey Parcell but his subsequent effort sailed wide.

Enfield continued to push forward but created little in terms of clear cut chances and were almost caught out four minutes before the break.

A fast counter-attack saw Tyler Christian-Law given too much space on the left and he fired a hard, low shot from 30 yards which was smothered by McDonald diving to his left.

In the second half Nigel Neita replaced Harry Ottaway who had taken a knock in the first half and the first 20 minutes of the second half was very similar to the first.

Hanwell broke rapidly in the 63rd minute and the ball was played out to Simmonds on the right.

He timed his run perfectly to stay onside and dash down the wing before crossing to Allen on the edge of the area, but the forward scuffed his attempt.

The visitors had their best chance to level five minutes later as they attacked down the left wing and a low cross found Campbell unmarked in the penalty area, but he blasted over.

Claudiu Vilcu was thrown up front as a target man as Enfield pushed for an equaliser and the pressure almost paid off. Gabriel played the ball low to Campbell eight yards out who turned well but saw his shot brilliantly saved by Minter.

Right at the death, Christian-Law cut inside and, from 35 yards out, curled a shot which eluded McDonald’s outstretched arm, but crashed off the crossbar.

But deep into stoppage time, Town made one final attack, Parcell dashed down the right wing but his cross was deflected behind for a corner and the quality of the subsequent corner was poor and Hanwell headed clear as the final whistle blew.
