Enfield Town won 3-2 against Skelmersdale United on Saturday in a 50th anniversary celebration of the FA Amateur Cup final.

In the 1966-67 season, the now-defunct Enfield FC, won 3-0 in a replay at Maine Road after a 0-0 draw at Wembley in which Enfield keeper Ian Wolstenholme saved a penalty at the end of extra time.

The penalty taker, Alan Bermingham, joined Enfield in the mid-1970s.

After an even start in the friendly 50 years later, Town slowly took control and the first goal attempt came in the ninth minute when Mark Kirby headed wide from a corner.

Chances came thick and fast for the away side and after 15 minutes, Corey Whitely was able to round the goalkeeper and slot home from a tight angle.

Before the end of the first half, Nigel Neita scored his first goal for Town after some neat interchanges in the midfield to make it 2-0 at the break.

Tayshan Hayden Smith and Dernell Wynter replaced Imedd Kartita and Neita in the half-time changes for Enfield.

Town started the second half like they finished the first and the pressure resulted in a third goal in the 62nd minute as Wynter played in Whitely who was able to score his second.

But United did not give in and three minutes later the deficit was reduced as they scored from the penalty spot.

The home side added another in the 77th minute but they were unable to gain a third to tie the game as Town held on until the final whistle.

This result was the first part of the celebration with the second, in which Skelmersdale United will visit Enfield Town in pre-season before the 2017-18 season starts, taking place 50 years after the original.

Town also beat Ware 3-1 in another pre-season friendly at Wodson Park which showed Town’s preparations for the 2016/17 season are heading in the right direction.

The Towners took the lead with a bit of magic from Samir Bihmoutine which saw his solo effort create some space and find the Ware net from 25 yards out.

However, the home side quickly hit back as Gareth Price beat Town keeper Nathan McDonald as the first half ended level.

In the second half, Enfield received a penalty when Aston Goss tussled with Whitely who fired home from the spot.

Tyler Campbell then put the game beyond reach for Ware as his lob from 50 yards was enough to seal the win.

Adding another pre-season game to the mix, Enfield will travel to Coles Park Stadium to face Haringey Borough on Saturday.

It will be the official opening of the new 3G pitch at the ground and Haringey have announced entry will be free for everyone.

There will be an official opening ceremony on pitch-side at 2.45pm prior to kick-off at 3pm.

The first match of the Ryman League Premier Division for Town comes at home to Canvey Island on Saturday, August 13 kicking off at 3pm.

After narrowly missing out on the play-offs over the past couple of seasons, the Enfield club will be hoping to begin the season as they mean to go on in their quest for promotion.
