Enfield Town boosted their Ryman Premier Division play-off hopes after a convincing 3-0 win at Leatherhead on Saturday.

It was the Towners’ first away league victory of 2016 and helped lift them up to ninth in the table.

The visitors were boosted by the return to the team of Harry Ottaway and Ryan Doyle but Micky Parcell and Phil Lowen were sidelined due to illness.

The strong wind was playing havoc at Fetcham Grove and made free-flowing football a challenge.

Corey Whitely had the first decent attempt of the match but his strike was charged down.

However it was only a brief reprieve for the home side as Bradley Quinton’s side took an early lead.

Tyler Campbell sent in a dangerous cross which was deflected and home goalkeeper Louis Wells missed the ball.

This enabled Bobby Devyne to tap into the unguarded net for the opening goal.

It did not take long for the Towners to double their lead as they made it 2-0 after 25 minutes.

Campbell again provided the attacking threat and his cross was calmly converted by Devyne from close range.

There was a scare for Enfield shortly afterwards when Harold Joseph lost possession and Phil Walsh broke away but he lobbed the ball into the side netting.

Visiting keeper Nathan McDonald was called into action later on in the half when he pushed away a header from Walsh.

The Towners continued to threaten the hosts and went close to scoring through Whitely but his shot was deflected over the crossbar.

Enfield added a third goal before the break in spectacular fashion after Whitely hit a superb overhead kick into the net.

Despite their commanding lead at half-time, Quinton’s side could have easily added to the scoreline during the second half of the match at Leatherhead.

Ottaway released Devyne and the striker eyed up his hat-trick but he was denied by a sharp save from Wells.

The visitors kept the pressure on and went close through Doyle but his shot flew narrowly over the bar.

Leatherhead were struggling to make any impact but had a rare opportunity through Frannie Collin which was easily saved by McDonald.

The Towners were comfortable enough as they kept a clean sheet and clinched a first away win in the league since the end of December.

Quinton’s side switch attention to the Alan Turvey Trophy tonight when they entertain Wingate & Finchley in the cup competition.

Enfield Town are at home to Lewes this weekend in the league as they bid to close the gap on the play-off spots.

The Towners will be heavy favourites to claim the three points against opponents sitting bottom of the table with just 19 points from 31 games.

Enfield will be hoping for a repeat of their 2-0 win at Lewes back in December when late goals from Phil Lowen and Ottaway earned victory for Quinton’s side.
