It was a very good weekend for Enfield Ignatians’ senior section with all three teams winning their league games, culminating with the Firsts’ comprehensive 24-7 defeat of Old Merchant Taylors’ in London Two North-West on Saturday.

Needing to get back on track after the Allianz Park disappointment against HAC, Ignatians achieved their mission in a performance of contrasting styles against a side propping up the table.

Despite playing into the wind in the first half, Enfield turned conventional wisdom on its head by bagging a decisive 19-0 interval lead after centre and man-of-the-match Ed Barker, fly-half Jake Bates and second row Rob Wyer all crossed the whitewash.

However, the second period was something of a damp squib in comparison despite the promising beginnings of an early try from Hadee Fayaz, as the ball was successfully swept out to the wing which enabled the blue and golds to wrap up the bonus point.

But Ignatians then eased off the gas, allowing their opponents to come more into the game which resulted in a consolation score for the visitors.

Coach Ali Cook said: “We were certainly up for the game physically and I thought we played some good rugby in the first half when we scored three tries.

“However, with reference to the second half, we need to improve our game management so as not to allow teams a way back into the game.”

The Seconds, beaten 40-7 by Harpenden earlier in the season, gained handsome 24-10 revenge on their home patch. Adam Murphy, Stiven Florez and Aaron James-Nicholls all claimed tries, with the blue and golds also being awarded a penalty try.

The Thirds won their away clash against St Albans Seconds 32-12 in Herts-Middlesex Merit Table Five. Dave Korthals, Adam Collins, Lewis White, Tom Hoy and Eron Dottin-Williams all crossed for the visitors, whose remaining points were secured via the boot of Dave Conlan.
