Table tennis talent Denise Payet reached the last 32 as she represented England at the Hungarian Junior & Cadet Open.

The Enfield 14-year-old won two of her three matches in the cadet girls’ singles qualifying group to make it through to the knockout stage, where her good run continued with a 3-0 victory over Luiza Popescu of Romania (11-7, 11-9, 11-9).

However, she found sixth seed Pei-Ling Su of Taipei too strong in the last 32 as she went down 3-1 (3-11, 9-11, 15-13, 11-13).

In the doubles, Payet and partner Charlotte Bardsley were defeated 3-1 in the first round by Anita Drabant and Viola Phan of the host nation (6-11, 9-11, 11-3, 12-14).

Enfield County student Payet also competed in the junior category against mostly older opponents, losing her three group matches in the singles.

In the doubles, Payet lined up alongside Serbia’s Edina Benko, and they came from two games down to beat Finnish pair Anna Kirichenko and Annika Lundstrom 3-2 (6-11, 11-13, 11-6, 11-5, 11-9) in the first round.

Their run was ended in the last 32 by eventual champions Yu-Jhun Li and Po-Hsuan Lin of Taipei, who won 3-1 (11-7, 11-13, 11-9, 11-6).

In the team event, Payet was joined by Emily Bolton and Kate Cheer as England lost to Belgium (3-0) and Germany B (3-1).

Payet defeated Germany’s Jennie Wolf 3-2 (11-8, 8-11, 12-14, 11-5, 12-10).
