Enfield Ignatians delivered their best performance of the season after dominating previously unbeaten Woodford 25-8 in London Two North-West on Saturday.

Playing up the slope in the first-period, Ignatians were on the defensive for long periods, but their effort combined with a well-taken try from winger Hadee Fayaz, saw them lead 5-3 at the interval after Woodford were restricted to a Tom Redfern penalty.

The Fayaz try was well worked and, with the forwards cleverly tying in Woodford around the fringes, it freed up space out wide through slick handling from the backline, allowing the right-winger to score.

Woodford had their chances as they missed three kicks at goal and also bypassed two opportunities to trouble the scoreboard from a five-metre scrum, before frustratingly squandering a clear overlap as the half drew to a close.

Ignatians, in marked contrast, were clinical. They extended their lead in the opening minutes of the second half after Jordan Wilson clicked with the boot, before going further ahead after captain Keir Bonnar successfully turned defence into attack with some hard-straight running as the centre ran-in from half-way.

Jordan Wilson added the extras and there was no let-up for Woodford as Ignatians continued to crank up the pressure.

A blue and gold maul worked up a head of steam, and after sighting the line, Woodford were then stretched in two different directions before Fayaz was played in for his brace.

Ignatians continued to get good width on their game and the three-quarter claimed a full house of tries after Robert Rigby was worked into space.

The winger still had work to do but some nifty footwork enabled him to elude the last defender as the hosts claimed maximum points.

Woodford continued to chase the game and were eventually rewarded with a last minute try.

Coach Ali Cook said: “Our defensive effort was fantastic and really on the button. In the second half we turned up the heat a notch or two and took the game away from Woodford. It’s all about consistency at this level but we deserved our tries, although there are areas for improvement.”

Ignatians are next in league action on November 7 when they entertain Staines at Donkey Lane.

The seconds almost ended the unbeaten league record of Hertford IVs in Herts-Middlesex Merit Table Two.

Leading 15-12 with a minute remaining after five successful Paul Duke penalties, the side conceded a late try as the visitors won 19-15.
