Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Roberto Soldado has admitted he lost his confidence whilst enduring a frustrating two-year spell in north London.

A graduate through the Real Madrid youth system, Soldado failed to live up to his reputation at White Hart Lane, after a prolific three-year stay at former club Valencia tempted Spurs to part with £26 million – a fee which temporarily made him the club’s record signing.

Although he returns to Spain having only managed seven league goals in 52 Premier League appearances – and only one last term – Soldado hopes to rediscover the form which made him one of the most feared strikers in Spain after returning to the country with Villarreal.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca, Soldado said: “This is a very important step in my career”

“I've been away for two years in which I haven't been able to give my best, but I'm convinced that I can score lots of goals for Villarreal”

"I've spent two very difficult years in England where I lost my confidence. Villarreal's interest has given me the enthusiasm and will to do great things.

"When their offer arrived I didn't hesitate as it is a great opportunity to return to Spain and join a big club.”

Soldado will hope to continue where he left off in Spain’s top flight, after scoring 81 goals in 141 appearances for Los Che.
