Enfield Water Polo Club’s winning run came to an end in London League Division Two after losing 12-11 at home to title rivals Watford.

The result keeps Enfield in second place and they are now four points behind leaders Watford in the race for the title.

It ended a run of eight consecutive wins for the team although only four of these came in the league.

Watford have now completed the double over them after a 20-10 victory back in April for the title favourites.

Enfield twice took the lead early on through captain Rob Threadgold and Andy Rollé, but Watford fought back to take a 3-2 advantage.

Claudio Palumbo replied for Enfield with a tidy finish but the visitors replied to claim a 4-3 lead at the end of an entertaining first quarter.

The Enfield team struggled in the next section with Andy Poore the only player getting on the scoresheet as Watford established an 8-4 lead in the midway point of the game.

In the third quarter, goalkeeper Andy Boorman kept Watford out while Rob Lucas (2), Richard Waller and Stefano Cortellini (2) scored to put Enfield 9-8 in front going into the final period of the match.

Waller scored his second of the night and Lucas completed his hat-trick to take Enfield 11-9 in front with three minutes remaining.

Watford levelled the score and there was a controversial end where the visitors had an effort ruled out.

But the last few seconds were replayed again and Watford snatched the victory to keep themselves in the driving seat for the title.

Enfield’s next league match is at the start of next month when they travel to Avondale on Monday, September 7.
