Spurs blew a two-goal lead in their first home game of the season with less than 15 minutes to go against Stoke City.

Eric Dier opened the scoring for Pochettino’s side with a flicked header before Nacer Chadli rifled home to send Spurs two up.

But two goals in five minutes saw Spurs collapse with ten minutes to go first from a Marko Arnautovic penalty and then a Mame Biram Diouf deft header to leave the home side frustrated

Captain Hugo Lloris returned between the sticks replacing Michel Vorm and Nabil Bentaleb made way for Ryan Mason in the centre of the park.

Spurs came undone in both matches against Stoke last season but looked to banish those memories as they quickly got on top.

If the North London side are to challenge for a top four place they will need to take maximum points from sides they are expected to beat.

Christian Eriksen tested Jack Butland in the Stoke goal twice in the first ten minutes with two low drives but the young English stopper kept the Dane at bay.

A horrendous pass from Lloris straight to Mame Biran Diouf almost led to the visitors opening the scoring but the French keeper atoned for his error by making a smart stop.

Eric Dier scored the first goal for Spurs last season and he replicated in this campaign as he rose highest to head home from an Eriksen corner.

Eriksen was at the heart of the action, producing a fine over-the-top ball to Nacer Chadli but his touch let him down and Butland was on hand to smother.

The majority of the half had been dominated by Mauricio Pochettino’s side but Stoke should have been level before the break.

First Arnautovic squeezed a cross along the six-yard box but no-one was on hand to take advantage. Then Jonathan Walter teed up Diouf three yards out but he headed straight at Lloris with the goal at his mercy.

A glaring miss that cost the away team as they were made to rue those two chances with Spurs doubling their lead on the stroke of half time.

A delightful chipped ball from Harry Kane to Ben Davies on the left wing allowed the full-back to scoop the ball across the box for Chadli to volley home with ease and leave Stoke boss Mark Hughes fuming.

Kane should have put the game beyond doubt within ten minutes of the second half as he was picked out by Chadli in the middle of the box but Jack Butland was there again to deny Spurs.

A tantalising ball from substitute Stephen Ireland found Diouf inside the box but again he was denied by his nemesis for the day Lloris who beat away the bullet header.

As the game looked like it was fizzling out into a 2-0 win, Spurs made life difficult for themselves as Toby Alderweireld tugged Joselu who went down easily but referee Madley pointed to the spot allowing Arnautovic to thunder home and set up a nervy last 12 minutes.

The tables had turned. Stoke were now on the up and an equaliser came with seven minutes to play.

Good work from Ireland down the left wing and his delicate cross was glanced home by Diouf who finally got the better of Lloris.

In the end Spurs had no response to the late goals and they were left frustrated with a late collapse.
