THE MODERN role of the Royal Navy will be demonstrated at a multi-media roadshow in Glasgow.

The show on March 18 at St Andrew's in the Square near the Saltmarket will see a Royal Navy Presentation Team demonstrate the range of activities the service undertakes.

Using the latest technology, the audience will be taken inside warships, submarines and aircraft.

Commander Justin Hughes, of the RNPT said: "Although everyone in the UK has heard of the Royal Navy, sometimes their understanding of what we do and why we do it can be less clear.

"On any day of the year, the Royal Navy and Royal Marines will typically be involved in providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief, fighting terrorists, undertaking peacekeeping operations and anti-drugs patrols and protecting UK citizens at home and abroad."

The presentation follows the launch in Govan last November of HMS Diamond, the third of the Daring Class Type 45 Air Defence Destroyers, and the cutting of the first piece of steel on the sixth of class, HMS Duncan, by Baroness Taylor last month.

These ships will provide the Royal Navy with the world's best air defence system, capable of tracking a target the size of a tennis ball moving at three times the speed of sound.

Commander Hughes, added: "The UK is the sixth largest trading nation in the world, so the role of the Royal Navy is as crucial as ever."

A number of places are still available for the presentation, and anyone who is interested can register at www.royalnavy.mod.uk/rnpt or phone 020 8833 8020.
