A DRUG based on lizard spit has been approved as a treatment to help hundreds of Scots diagnosed with diabetes each year.
The Scottish Medicines Consortium has approved the injected drug, Byetta, to help people with Type 2, or late onset diabetes.
The artificial version of a hormone in the saliva of the gila monster lizard has proved better than insulin treatment for patients.
Unlike insulin, Byetta is not linked to weight gain - a major worry for many diabetics.
And there's hope it could delay the need for Type 2 diabetics to start injecting insulin for several years.
