Southampton's on-loan defender Toby Alderweireld has dropped a big hint he would like to join Tottenham Hotspur by revealing his desire to play with Belgium team-mate Jan Vertonghen.

The 26-year-old centre-back is currently on loan at St Mary's from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid and has impressed at the heart of the Saints' defence.

However, the former Ajax defender has announced he would like to play alongside Spurs defender Vertonghen, his partner at the centre of defence for Belgium.

The pair have previously played together for four years at Dutch giants Ajax and it was from the Amsterdam side Vertonghen joined Spurs in 2012.

Alderweireld told HLN: "It would be very nice to play again with Jan. The interest has yet to be concrete and finally Atletico must let me go.

"Maybe they want me back in Madrid. I have to wait for the calls after the season.

"Atletico Madrid will largely decide what I’ll do. But that such clubs are interested only indicates that I’m doing well."
