Enfield Town moved within four points of the play-off places by beating Leatherhead 3-1 on Saturday and manager Bradley Quinton says it is now do or die for the Towners’ top-five aspirations.

Town make the trip to fourth-bottom Witham Town in the Isthmian Premier Division tonight and a victory would have catapulted Quinton’s side from 12th to sixth – just one point and one place shy of Metropolitan Police in the final play-off berth.

Six wins in their last nine games have seen the Towners edge closer to the play-offs in terms of points without making much headway in league positions.

“It is now do or die,” admitted Quinton. “When we drop points the teams around us seem to drop points as well.

“We have beaten Margate, Leatherhead home and a number of the other teams above us already this season. It is going down to the wire but it is in our hands.

“I am looking forward to the run-in really. They are all fit lads and as the season goes on, other teams seem to tire or drop points but we go on regardless.”

After a goalless opening period on Saturday, Quinton gave his side both barrels during the interval and was rewarded with a vastly-improved second-half showing which included a goal within a minute of the restart from Corey Whitely.

“I let them have it at half time,” admitted Quinton. “In terms of how we started the game it was not acceptable. I wanted them to use their pace and ability to run at them and get at them in the second half and they did just that when we scored straight from kick off. From there on in we played out from the back.

“I was very pleased with the second half but I was not happy in the first. Whether it had something to do with them having Tuesday off I do not know.

“They (Leatherhead) came with one up front and looked for a draw or anything they could nick.”

Quinton continued: “We were not pressing high enough up the pitch but we scored and from then on in it always looked like we would score more goals.”

Ryan Doyle grabbed the second from the penalty spot after Jerry Nnamani clipped Whitely in the penalty area. And with ten minutes left the prolific Bobby Devyne maintained his hot streak by firing low beyond visiting goalkeeper Louis Wells.

Former Watford youngster Michael Kalu might have added a fourth after setting off on a jinking run but could not find a way past Wells.

And Quinton praised the application of the 21-year-old, who has not always been a regular for the Towners this term.

He said: “We put him back in the Under-21s to get him some games because his match fitness was behind. The are a great bunch of lads and Michael Kalu has been exceptional with his attitude.

“He is still feeling the pace a little bit but he has really impressed me lately and deserves a lot of credit,” added Quinton.

The crowd at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium was boosted by 100 YB SK Beveren supporters, making the return visit after Town travelled to Belgium in pre-season and Quinton believes his side felt the benefit.

He said: “It is good for some of the young lads that are coming through to have vocal support.

“When you have got people like our players who are comfortable picking the ball up and running at people then the crowd react and the players do it again and again.”

Town travel to 15th-placed Peacehaven & Telscombe on Saturday before visiting Lewes on Wednesday evening.
