A brilliant individual goal from Andros Townsend helped Spurs dust off the Capital One Cup final defeat to beat Swansea 3-2.

Townsend added to the goals of Nacir Chadli in the first half and a maiden Premier League goal for Ryan Mason after Ki had equalised for the visitors.

Former Spurs man Gylfi Sigurdsson volleyed home with two minutes to go and set up a nervous final few moments but the home side clung on to their first win in five games.

Off the back of the cup final defeat against Chelsea at Wembley and Mauricio Pochettino decided to keep the same starting XI.

Questions of fatigue seemed to be cast aside quickly as the lilywhites raced into an early lead.

A sumptuous cross from Danny Rose found Chadli who had made a bursting run into the box to volley home.

The goal was overshadowed by the collapse of Bafetemi Gomis on the halfway line just before the restart.

The Frenchman, who has a history of collapsing – three times in his career to date- received treatment for five minutes before being stretchered off.

The visitors did not take long to respond and levelled things up just before 20 minutes.

A Gylfi Sigurdsson free-kick rattled the woodwork and the Spurs defence failed the clear their lines. Jan Vertonghen missed his attempt at a clearance allowing Ki to sneak in and slot his shot between the legs of Hugo Lloris.

The home side dominated possession but struggled to create anything leaving fans frustrated as the Swansea defence continued to shut the door in the first half.

Sigurdsson was given far too much space to dictate play and helped set up another former player Kyle Naughton get away a shot which fizzed wide.

Christian Eriksen’s delightful inswinging cross almost found Harry Kane after Lukas Fabianski fluffed his punch, getting the slightest touch on it to deny the striker a tap in.

Five minutes into the second half Pochettino’s side took the lead once more and it was a moment to savour for Mason.

A weaving run from Eriksen across the box was almost defended by Ashley Williams but his clearance hit Eriksen and found Mason who bursts into the box before placing his shot into the top corner.

The game seemed over after 60 minutes with a fantastic breakaway from Townsend after Nabil Bentaleb was fouled winning a header in his own half.

The English international then drove into the Swansea half before cutting back and slotting home inside the box to make it 3-1.

Praise has to be given to referee Michael Oliver who allowed the game to continue and let Townsend score a wonderful solo effort.

Nerves were jangling as Spurs seemed comfortable but then Sigurdsson rifled in a Jefferson Montero cross in the 88th minute.

The home side panicked. They had been in cruise control but the final few moments were frantic and Williams almost got an improbable point for the away team but Hugo Lloris clawed away to give his side all three points.
