Mauricio Pochettino said he cannot fault the attitude of his striker Roberto Soldado after his glaring miss in Spurs’ win against Burnley.

Spurs battled back from 2-0 down to win 4-2 in the FA Cup third round replay with goals from Paulinho, Etienne Capoue, Vlad Chiriches and Danny Rose.

However Roberto Soldado, who has had a tough time adapting to English football since he joined Spurs in 2013, grabbed the headlines once more with a chance which seemed easier to score.

The Spaniard was given the golden opportunity to level things up in the first half after Paulinho slipped the ball across the six yard box.

Yet the striker could only strike the ball onto the crossbar, much to the Spurs faithful frustration.

Pochettino defended his forward and said: “It is always a tough period for a striker when he doesn’t score but I am happy with his performance and he knows that we support him.

“Yes [confidence is an issue] but the important thing for me is that he fights hard and tries to be his best. His attitude is perfect. In football when you try to give the best, the recompense arrives.”

When asked whether Soldado apologised for his miss, Pochettino said: “In football you do not need to apologies because we are sorry for him because he deserved to score.”

The Spurs manager was satisfied with the comeback and claimed the result was deserved.

He said: “I am happy because we made a mistake but was then a little bit unlucky with the second goal. I am happy we showed the team character to come back and if we take out the first eight minutes, I think we deserve to go through to the next round.”

Tottenham lost their first match in eight last weekend as they threw away a 1-0 lead at Crystal Palace and the Spurs boss said it was important for his side to bounce back.

He said: “It was very important because we lost the opportunity to push in the table after beating Chelsea.

“We need to give 100 per cent in every game and it is important for the confidence. [Tonight] gave different players the opportunity to play and compete for positions.”

Spurs face Sunderland at the weekend before their first leg of the Capital One Cup semi final against Sheffield United on Wednesday night.
