A stunning strike from substitute Ryan Mason helped Tottenham Hotspur come from behind to beat Nottingham Forest in the Capital One Cup.

The sumptuous 30-yard strike was Mason’s first for the club and cancelled out Jorge Grant’s opener for Forest.

Roberto Soldado then showed his poachers instinct which saw the lillywhites pay big money for him last summer as he deflected in Andros Townsend’s shot with eight minutes to go.

Harry Kane rounded off the scoring in added time after latching onto a subtle pass from Erik Lamela.

Mauricio Pochettino made eleven changes to the side that slipped to defeat against West Brom three days earlier and his side had the lion share of possession.

Michel Vorm in the Spurs goal was making his first appearance for the Pochettino's team with Federico Fazio and Benjamin Stambouli making their home debuts.

A nervous Tottenham crowd had seen two home defeats in a row and chances in the first half were few and far between with Spurs having 71 per cent of the possession.

Yet the first real effort came after 23 minutes when Forest midfielder Ben Osborn beat Fazio and Stambouli before unleashing an effort which cannoned off the underside of the bar.

It was not until the 55th minutes that Spurs had their first clear cut opportunity when a whipped cross from Ben Davies was met with a flick from Paulinho that eluded the far corner.

Despite the statistics showing Spurs’ dominance in possession, passing in the final third let Pochettino’s side down, much to the aggravation of the White Hart Lane faithful.

The tension that had built up for the first half escalated when Forest opened the scoring and it was another defensive nightmare by the home team.

A blocked shot found its way to striker Lars Veldwijk on the left wing who was able to get a low cross into the box where the slightest flick from Stephen McLaughlan at the front post found Grant, in acres of space six yards out, to send Vorm the wrong way.

Substitute Harry Kane went closest to equalising as he headed Ben Davies shot straight into the gloves of Dorus De Vries.

But Spurs did not have to wait long before an equaliser and it was worth waiting for.

Substitute Ryan Mason picked up the ball from 30 yards before driving a shot into the top corner leaving De Vries with no chance.

Townsend nearly completed the turnaround three minutes later when his 25-yard freekick smashed onto the crossbar and back into play.

The turnaround was complete with eight minutes left when Townsend’s shot from 30 yards was expertly redirected into the net by Soldado in the middle of the penalty box for his first goal of the season.

Pochettino’s side were now in cruise control and has exerted their Premier League class to make it 3-1.

Substitute Lamela slide in Kane wonderfully before the striker slotted into the bottom left corner of the goal.
