Enfield Town and George Borg have parted company, hours after the former manager told the Enfield Independent he would "walk away" if he couldn't "take the club forward".

The former Braintree Town manager returned to the club in December and helped the Towners avoid relegation, but after busy summer of recruitment, Enfield had begun the new campaign with four defeats from six.

A brief statement on the club's website read:

"Following the 2-3 defeat at home to Wingate and Finchley on Monday 25th August, Enfield Town FC and manager George Borg have parted company.

"Assistant Manager Bradley Quinton will be in charge of the team for next Saturday’s trip to Hendon and until further notice.

"The club will be making no further comment at this time, but will issue a further statement in due course."

Speaking to the Enfield Independent this morning, Borg said: "If at the end of the day, I don’t think I can take the club any further, I will walk away.

"If the club feel they can get someone else to take the club forward, I’m prepared to walk away again."

He continued: "I will not accept people having a go at me, because I enjoy working at Enfield Town Football Club.

"Bradley Quinton and I could have walked away at the end of the season and gone to three, maybe four, other clubs but we chose to stay at Enfield because we had such a great time last year.

"I’m not a normal manager. I will do what I can but if I think I can’t take this club further, I will walk away, because that’s the way I am. I’m hoping I can get a team which can finish mid-table or above," Borg added.

The Towners lost both their Bank Holiday weekend fixtures, going down 2-1 at Canvey Island on Saturday before succumbing to a 3-2 defeat against Wingate and Finchley on Monday.
