Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has stated that he is ready to make his first appearance of the season.

The Belgium centre back was rested for last weekends late victory over West Ham United along with compatriots Moussa Dembele and Nacer Chadli following their World Cup exploits.

However, Vertonghen told the Haringey Independent that he is hoping to be involved against AEL Limassol on Thursday.

When asked if he fit to play, he said: “I hope so, I have had a couple of good sessions the past couple of weeks together with the other World Cup guys and I hope to be ready for Thursday.

“It is the manager’s choice, of course, but I hope I can play and that I am allowed to play.”

The 27-year-old was speaking at a welcoming event for Hong Kong’s under 16 national team who are training at Tottenham’s training ground in Enfield ahead of their Asian championships next month.

After watching debutant Eric Dier bag an injury time winner against the Hammers, Vertonghen admitted he was desperate to be involved in the last minute celebrations.

He said: “I was very happy the team and it was a shame I wasn’t there. I really wanted to be in the bundle with the team at the end.

“They did very well to win the game; West Ham away is a very difficult place to go especially with ten men for a long part of the game.”
