USA World Cup star DeAndre Yedlin is in advanced talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a switch from MLS side Seattle Sounders, according to BBC Sport.

The 21-year-old right-back, who impressed for the United States during this summer’s World Cup in Brazil, had been linked with a switch to White Hart Lane by ESPN earlier this week.

An athletic, pacey, attack-minded full-back, the 2013 season was Yedlin’s first for the Sounders’ first team and the Seattle-born defender has since gone on to make 52 appearances for the franchise in all competitions, scoring on three occasions.

Yedlin recently featured in the MLS All-Stars’ 2-1 win over Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich and last season was selected to face Serie ‘A’ side Roma, becoming the first rookie to be picked since 2005.

Owing to work permit restrictions in the UK, it is anticipated Yedlin will remain with the Sounders this season before moving to the Premier League next year to join Spurs in a switch believed to be worth £2.75m.

Sounders GM, Adrian Hanauer, said: “DeAndre is overseas. Obviously we’re not going to give out a lot of detail...certainly something we’re working toward is a potential transaction.”

He added: “This will be a deal where he won’t be immediately transferred and then loaned back. It will be a deal that is constructed in a way that potentially he would be here through the end of the year, potentially longer.”

Non-EU players coming to the UK must have played in 75 per cent of their nation’s international fixtures within the last two years prior to their move but Yedlin only made his debut for the USA in January of this year and has won seven caps to date.

Yedlin made three appearances for Jurgen Klinsmann’s side during the World Cup in Brazil – all of them off the bench – and provided the assist for former Spurs player Clint Dempsey to score against Portugal in the group stages.
