Sporting Lisbon defender Eric Dier is set to become Spurs’ latest signing after turning down a contract extension at the Portuguese club, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Tottenham hope to sign the England Under-21 defender for a fee believed to be in the region of £4m.

Cheltenham-born Dier, who moved to Portugal when he was ten, signed professional terms with Sporting in April 2010.

The Portuguese club beat the likes of Spurs, Arsenal and Manchester United - the club which Dier supported as a child - to capture the talented defender.

The 20-year-old’s parents moved back to England in 2010 but Dier stayed behind to play at Sporting.

In January 2011, Dier had a short loan spell with Everton but failed to make a first-team appearance for the Toffees.

Although Dier was asked to play at international level for Portugal, the defender has played for the England Under-18s, Under-19s, Under-20s and Under-21s.

If the deal goes ahead, Dier will become the club’s third summer addition, joining left-back Ben Davies and goalkeeper Michel Vorm at the North London club.
