Teenage high jumper Chris Kandu set a new personal best as he came first in a record breaking performance at the England Athletics Indoor Championships in Sheffield.

The Enfield Grammar School pupil set a PB of 2.22m and broke the height competition record which was set 23 years ago.

The 18-year-old has competed for Great Britain and Team England and is currently coached by John Herbert.

The athlete also gained a qualifying jump height that enters him for the IAAF World Junior Championships in Oregon USA in July.

Kandu started jumping at the age of 13 and has enjoyed a rapid rise in the sport.

He was 45th in the UK Under-15 rankings in 2009 but within a year had jumped 1.90m to climb up to second in the rankings.

In 2011, Kandu managed 2.06 m which made him first in the UK Under-17 standings.

His progression continued last year when he jumped 2.18m to become the top Under-20 high jumper and this is a position he still holds.

Kandu [pictured] has been training alongside Olympic bronze medallist Robbie Grabarz and is hoping to make a big impression at the world junior championships this summer.
