Enfield and Haringey Athletics Club's young race walker Callum Wilkinson clocked the staggering time of 6.38.86 to win the Eastern Indoor mile championship at Lee Valley Athletic Centre on Sunday.
His walking was exemplary, passing the close scrutiny of the four UKA judges officiating at the event.
With the exception of former Portuguese international Fransisco Reis (7.31.79), he lapped the entire field to record, subject to confirmation, what is believed to be a stadium and Eastern Counties record.
This performance underlines his potential in the discipline and was surprising in some respects because he is still in the middle of a demanding winter training regime, much of it carried out at Lee Valley Athletic Centre.
