While football fans across the country were lamenting the number of postponed matches at the weekend, Enfield Town boss George Borg says the small break has been a "godsend" for his side.

The Towners have not been in action since December 28 as their New Year’s Day fixture against Hendon and Saturday’s clash against Grays Athletic both fell victim to the weather.

While supporters have been left frustrated, Borg says it has given him a vital opportunity to work with his players as they continue to battle against relegation in the Ryman Premier.

He said: "It has been a godsend. It has given us time to work on a lot of things that the lads haven’t worked on yet.

"It has given the players that I have brought in time to gel with the squad and that will only help us going forward.

"I have been really pleased and everyone is working very hard. The fitness of the players is improving and that will be a big help for us.

"So things are improving and we will just need that little slice of lady luck to go our way going forward."

Since his arrival last month Borg has made several changes to the playing squad. Chris Wild and Anton Olondo, who signed with the club in the summer, have moved on while a mainstay of recent seasons, Adam Wallace, departed for Hendon after Steve Newing’s sacking.

In have come Bertie Brayley, Marlon Thomas, Bradley Quinton, Sam Griffiths and Newman Carney and Borg is pleased with the new additions and the attitude of the players.

He remains on the lookout for new signings but wants to give those players already in his side the chance to turn the team’s fortunes around.

He explained: "I am happy with the players we have got at the club and their confidence is growing as they are improving in matches. So we are seeing a bit of a change amongst the players.

"I am still speaking to other players so we will see what happens with them. But I will see how the players at the club do over the next few matches because they have done very well recently."
