Enfield Town’s relegation worries deepened with a double defeat during the Christmas period to make it 11 losses in their last 13 matches.

Margate beat Enfield 1-0 on Saturday at Hartsdown Park to inflict the Towners’ second defeat in three days, following a 4-2 loss at home to Wealdstone.

On Saturday, Enfield caused the Margate defence problems but could not turn their early opportunities into goals.

Liam Hope tested Margate goalkeeper Craig Holloway while Tyler Campbell spurned a decent chance.

Warren Whitely was a real threat for Margate and he almost created the opener for Charles Ademeno but Noel Imber managed to save his effort.

At the other end, Mark Kirby fired a shot just past the Margate post as the visitors finished the half in the ascendancy.

Enfield almost opened the scoring in the second period through Bertie Brayley but his back heel was deflected past the post.

This brought Margate to life and the home side grabbed the decisive goal when Imber parried a shot and Joe Vines reacted quickest to tuck home the rebound from close range.

The Towners’ final chance to rescue a point came late on but Hope failed to find the target.

Three days earlier, a gutsy fightback from Enfield was not enough to rescue a point as they lost 4-2 at home to Wealdstone.

The Stones took the lead when former Enfield Town striker Scott McGleish slid the ball past Imber.

The Towners were again punished by McGleish seven minutes before half-time when his powerful strike flew into the net.

Wealdstone increased their lead after the restart through Tom Pett but this sparked a brave fightback from the hosts.

Hope managed to force the ball over the goal line in the 68th minute which gave Enfield a big lift.

The Towners pulled another goal back when Brayley volleyed home Sam Griffiths’ cross.

But hopes of snatching a point were scuppered by promotion-chasing Wealdstone, with Pett sliding the ball home on the break.
