New Enfield Town manager George Borg admits “there is a lot of work to do” to help move the Towners away from the Ryman Premier relegation zone and believes his players are not fit enough.

Borg was named Enfield’s new boss last Wednesday and was in the dugout on Saturday as his side drew 2-2 against Carshalton Athletic.

The draw ended a run of six successive defeats in all competitions but the Towners are in the bottom three after taking just 13 points from 19 matches.

“I think I have some decent players here but I don’t think I have enough,” Borg said. “I feel the players are not fit enough and that is a big problem.

“The players are training for one hour on a Tuesday and one hour on a Thursday and I don’t think that is enough in this league.

“The lack of fitness has been a shock for me so we are going to have to work hard on improving that.

“The first 45 minutes on Saturday were excellent and we showed a lot of the things we have worked on. But Carshalton battled back and their manager did say our players looked tired in the second half. That is what we are going to have to work on.”

Borg, who has previously managed at the likes of Aldershot Town, Harrow Borough and AFC Hornchurch, has spent time in America during the last four years coaching young players but was looking to move back into non-league football.

He described Enfield as his “dream club” and added: “I loved going out to America and coaching but I wanted to get back into non-league football and Enfield Town were the perfect club for me to do that.

“There is a lot of work to do here, there’s no doubt about that. But hopefully I can get a squad together that can get us out of the position we are in.”

Borg is expecting several changes to be made to the playing squad and Adam Wallace and Chris Wild left the club on Friday.

Wallace made 196 appearances for the club since making his debut against AFC Hornchurch in July 2009. He scored 54 goals during his time with Enfield but has departed and signed with fellow Ryman Premier club Hendon.

The first signing made by Borg saw midfielder Bradley Quinton join from Braintree Town and the Enfield manager says more players will leave the club.

He explained: “There will be six or seven players going because I need to free up some funds to bring in players.

“I am hoping to get four new players in as soon as I can but we are not in the greatest position to attract players to the club.”

Borg’s second game in charge sees promotion chasing Kingstonian visit the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium.

The K’s have lost just one of their last six league matches but that came on Monday evening against Wealdstone.

Borg admits it will be a difficult game for his side but wants the players to produce an encouraging display.

He said: “To end the run of defeats will have been good for our confidence and we will work hard this week and look to do better at the weekend.

“Kingstonian are a good side and it will certainly be a tough game for us. Hopefully we can work hard and do well. The main thing I want is a good performance.

“It is a tough challenge for us but all the players need to give their all.”
