Enfield Ignatians claimed their first victory of the season after beating Norwich
9:00am Wednesday 2nd October 2013 in Sport
Enfield Ignatians gained their first win of the London Two North-East season as they defeated Norwich 29-17 at Donkey Lane.
Emile Hertz’s side were inconsistent in the opening half but Dan Savagar and Tan Mbonu both went over for the Blue and Golds.
However, Carl Buckland was sin-binned late in the half and Norwich took advantage to go into the interval with a 17-14 lead.
Despite living dangerously in the second period, Ignatians successfully kept their line intact after weathering some heavy Norwich pressure.
Showing the greater cutting edge, Ignatians made the game safe by adding 15 unanswered points following further tries from wingers Savagar and Mbonu and a penalty from Jordan Wilson - who successfully converted three of Enfield’s tries.
Hertz said: “I was angry at half-time and had a go at the team. They then sparked into life and we saw a lot of the ball but couldn't convert our chances. Defensively we were disorganised at times, our line speed was poor and we were slow to react at times.
“However, the side responded well after the interval by reacting positively. Wes Warren was our man-of-the-match. He made some excellent carries and gave us a lot of go forward in open play.”
Ignatians will look to build on their victory on Sunday as they travel to Holt.
It proved to be an excellent weekend for the club and the Twos remain unbeaten in Herts-Middlesex Merit Table Two following a hard-fought 27-20 win over Fullerians Twos.
Rob Wyer, Hadee Fayaz, Tom Jordan and Christian Adofo all crossed for Ignatians. Paul Duke added seven points via the boot.
Ignatians Threes are yet to taste defeat in Herts-Middlesex Merit Table Three after they secured a 25-0 default win over Welwyn Threes after the opposition failed to honour the fixture.
Ignatians Fours claimed a 29-14 win over Old Albanians Fives with Shemley Gordon, Edmund Essilfie-Quaye, James Power (two) and Wes Silva all going over.
Enfield’s Under-15s started their Herts-Middlesex Division Three campaign with a 29-14 victory against Cheshunt.
Trailing 14-12 at the break after a lethargic start, the hosts came back strongly in the second-half. Tries by Conor Gray (two), Glory Makabukidi, Jack Allen and Andy Pavius sealed a confidence boosting win.
