Enfield Town boss Steve Newing insists side are much better than last year

Enfield Town boss Steve Newing insists his side are in a much better position than 12 months ago despite picking up fewer points.
The Towners won their first two games in the Ryman Premier Division last season but only managed three points from their openers this campaign.
But Newing, whose side finished 16th last season, said: “There is a better feeling around the place and plenty of room for optimism.
“I think we’re in a much better place squad wise and the lads who played last season have learnt a lot about what is required at this level.
“The performances this season are far better than they were last year.
“We had six points at this stage last season but we didn’t deserve it. This year we’ve picked up one win but we could have easily come away with four points.”
The Towners got off the mark with a dominant 2-1 victory over Met Police on Saturday but lost 3-0 at Kingstonian on Monday night.
Reflecting on their first defeat of the campaign, Newing said: “It was a tough game but the scoreline flattered them for sure.
“It was an even game and we restricted them to about five chances. The only difference is they took a couple of them and we didn’t take our opportunities when we were on top. The only negative was the scoreline.
“They probably deserved to win but considering we scored an own goal, they scored a superb second and then an unstoppable free-kick at the end, the scoreline sounds a lot worse than it was.”
Enfield were in excellent form at the weekend, beating Met Police.
Liam Hope scored twice in the victory and Newing felt his side could have easily won by more.
The Enfield boss, who takes his side to rivals Grays Athletic this weekend, said: “We dominated the match and if we had won by three, four or five goals that would not have been unjust.
“It was a difficult start for us because I thought that our first two games were against sides that are capable of challenging for the title. But we have acquitted ourselves well against both of them.”
