Ellenborough Table Tennis Club’s Denise Payet added to her growing reputation by being crowned triple champion at the English National Table Tennis Championships.

The 11-year-old was a double champion twelve months ago but went one better this time around.

Payet, a pupil at Enfield County School, was first in action in the girls’ under-14 singles event.

She suffered a scare in her semi-final against Kate Cheer but clinched the deciding set 12-10 to advance to the final.

Payet took on Yorkshire’s Kate Nixon in the final and her free flowing topspin game helped her claim a three sets to one victory.

A tiring Payet finished runner-up in the girls’ under-13 competition later in the day but she teamed up with Middlesex teammate Zahna Hall to win the girls’ doubles event against Shreya Mehta and Stephanie Cross.

On Sunday Payet claimed victory in the girl’s Under-12 competition without dropping a set. She defeated Bhavika Mistry in the final in straight sets.

There was a double celebration for Ellenborough as Amelia Chan, from Southgate, won a bronze medal in the girls’ under 11 event Chan has only been playing table tennis for just over a year but showed her potential throughout the competition.

She defeated top seed Alice Dillon on route to the final where she just came up short.

Chan overcame Mollie Paterson in the quarter-finals but was beaten by three sets to one against top seed Alice Dillon in their last four match.

Ellenborough Table Tennis Club chairman Keith Williams said: “Denise is making us proud in both the way she plays and sets an example to other youngsters at the club.

“Her success, and the emergence of Amelia Chan, is a testament to all the coaches involved at the club.”
