I’ve always assumed that the dinosaurs were caught by surprise by their extinction, having had no opportunity to take action to avoid it. In the case of the owners of the 37 million cars cited by Mr Musey (‘Councillor’s cycling vision is flawed’, Opinion March 4), they have had warnings a-plenty that the continuing profligate burning of fossil fuel will result in a comparable apocalyptic climax.

Of course, the local contribution to climate change is modest in the face of a global phenomenon and likewise Cycle Enfield looks merely gestural in such a context. Nevertheless, the Cycle Enfield initiative and the energetic debate currently in progress are wonderful consciousness-raising phenomena, even if they seemingly boil down, as is so often the case, to parking. But here too we have progress: some rare and refreshingly hard evidence on this point has been introduced – Mr Kingsnorth (‘Surprised at opposition’, Opinion, March 4) has usefully thrown some light on just how much shopping can be done in Palmers Green without needing to park a car first.

We may be some way from the necessary thorough-going change in our lifestyles, a chance that the dinosaurs were denied, but at least Cycle Enfield, whatever form it finally may take, represents one small step (or revolution of the wheel) in the right direction.
