Josie Purcell’s letter (‘Has equality gone backwards’, Opinion, February 18) struck a raw nerve in me, and I totally agree with her strongly held views.
As a past member of the Labour Party and life-long Labour voter, like so many other people in today’s supposed enlightened modern world, I have become disillusioned with politics in general. There are many reasons, and one is the shenanigans all parties seem to be involved in when it comes to selecting council or parliamentary candidates. Perhaps I am old fashioned, but what has happened to the outstanding candidate being shortlisted and eventually given the job. I believe in equality, but today it appears it has to be linked with ethnicity, colour and gender, not competence.
Sadly, I will not be voting Labour at the next election, nor will members of my family. Who will I vote for? At the moment it is a plague on all their houses, such is the dire state of party politics in the UK.
