I write in response to Conservative councillor Mike Rye’s letter (‘Determined to undo the work of the Tories’, Opinion, February 4) in regards to services carried out by the council.

I was somewhat amazed to read his attack on any proposed spending cuts that this Labour council may have to make when it is in fact down to the Conservative/Lib Dems that are cutting the amount available to Enfield by £60million over the next three years.

It smacks of sheer hypocrisy for the Tories to attack this administration when their own parties are the ones responsible for the tough decisions being made by the council. A £34m reduction in the next financial year equates to approximately £445 per household in the borough.

In regards to the issues that Cllr Rye raises, ie bulky items being paid for, if the Tories hadn’t sold off Carterhatch waste site perhaps there wouldn’t be so many of these items dumped in the street that then require collection by the council.

Locking parks at night – really. Is this the attack plan for the Tories? The majority of parks and open spaces in Enfield are open. Just prior to Chrstmas a locked park at Grovelands was subjected to an arson attack. Perhaps if the Conservative Mayor of London didn’t keep slashing the amount of police in the borough residents would feel more confident about living near parks.

So bearing all that in mind perhaps Cllr Rye is less Mr Angry and more Mr Forgetful, forgetting that it is his party that has caused these problems.
