Mr Hughes’ attitude towards motoring is evident (‘Good servant but bad masters’, Opinion, October 15). In his own words, he said: “Current attitudes to travel on urban roads are a mindset created by a century of putting cars first. It’s a mindset that is dangerous, anti-social, limits children’s independence, is destructive of local town centres and shopping areas and undemocratic” (‘Bikes and cars are simply tools’, Opinion, July 2).

Most of his correspondence over the years has been in similar vein. Against this background, Mr Hughes says he is not anti-car because he owns and uses a car, which poses the question, why is he so critical of other motorists? His latest contribution is that they are feather-bedded.

The car is not our master. It is an indispensable work horse enjoyed by over 30million owners, including Mr Hughes, providing safe, comfortable travel door to door at a moment’s notice. It does, however, require space to work in, opposed by Mr Hughes. The idea that these people would prefer to walk, use public transport or ride a bike is nonsense.
