I have received a questionnaire entitled ‘Quieter Neighbourhoods Wolves Lane Area’. The object of the exercise is to stop so-called ‘rat-running’ through the area. To achieve this, it will be necessary to impose road restrictions on traffic movement.

The area is large and contains 3,500 properties and residents owning in excess of 3,500 cars. In their eagerness to provide a quiet area, Enfield Borough Council seems to have ignored car ownership because road restrictions will affect residents also. Is the council also unaware of the existing traffic congestion and air pollution on the A406, A10 and Green Lanes bordering the area? If a quiet neighbourhood is imposed traffic will increase on these roads.

I understand the council wishes to create more quiet neighbourhoods across the borough. They should be cancelled because all drivers are ‘rat-runners’ and it is not possible to separate residents who drive along the same roads. An example is where Melville Gardens residents denied access from the A406 drive along Chequers Way and Tottenhall Road to return home.

The council’s priority should be to reduce traffic congestion and associated air pollution, not fostering schemes that inhibit traffic movement and add to congestion and poor air quality.
