As the parent of a child in Year 1 who will be required to take the Year 1 phonics screening check in the second week of June (the same week in which she will just be six), I would like to thank all the Year 1 teachers in Enfield schools who do a brilliant job teaching our children to read and to enjoy the experience.
Our teachers know what our children can do and how to help them to improve.
Why then is Michael Gove, the Education Secretary, insisting that all the children have to sit a test at which they pass or fail?
Testing children at age five and six is wrong and I urge all Enfield parents of children in Year 1 to call on the Government to stop the test and trust teachers.
