As we mark Volunteers’ Week (June 1-7), I wanted to highlight the many benefits that come with being a volunteer, and maybe inspire readers who were thinking about becoming one, to take the plunge and go for it.

Volunteering plays a wonderful role in not only developing a person’s skill set, but also allowing them to put into practice experience they have amassed over the years. In addition, working with people of different ages and backgrounds brings a balance and a good mix to any organisation, which is vital in terms of making it a success.

I’ve been volunteering for 14 years and love every minute of it. It’s so rewarding to have the opportunity to work with children and young people and guide them through a programme which includes playing games, being creative and learning new skills.

Volunteering is rewarding. It is the lifeblood of many charitable organisations, like The Boys’ Brigade; and through the donation of time, skills and creativity, can make such a difference to the lives of young people across the country. Once you get involved in volunteering in an organisation like this you’ll never look back.
