Regarding Rick Jewell’s letter regarding dumped mattresses (‘Old mattresses belong at the dump’, Opinion, May 21, 2014), it should be remembered that Enfield Borough Council in its wisdom closed Carterhatch Road recycling centre and Enfield now has only one council recycling centre, for a large borough.
Fly-tipping is endemic throughout the borough, prosecutions few and far between, and it’s debatable how much money the council is saving given the number of council clean-up teams I see on a daily basis.
The council also used to offer a collection service for large items (such as mattresses) free for every household, once a year. Now this is chargeable. If the council made it easier (and cheaper) to dispose of these items, we probably wouldn’t have the problem.
Over to you Enfield Council.
