It is with a certain amount of sadness and incredulity that I put pen to paper, to voice my opinion of today’s lifestyle.
I am an elderly lady, aged 88, living in a flat in the borough of Enfield. It is a small block surrounded by lawns with a pathway leading outside to the pavement.
There are nine males under 50 living here, as well as seven or eight females under 40.
It is therefore a great surprise to me that in the last three weeks of inclement weather, not one person here has attempted in any way to clear away the snow. I find it incredible in this day and age that such a situation should exist.
I certainly do not think my age entitles me in any way to special treatment. I am an extremely independent person and I manage to do most things myself, but in this case the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. The clearing of the snow is something I am unable to tackle.
One would think clearing the paths, whoever did it, would be a natural reaction to the present conditions, either for their own self-respect or the upkeep of the surroundings in which they live.
I am of course reminded of the time in the Sixties when similar weather conditions happened.
My two young sons asked me to buy them a roadsweeping brush — a huge thing with strong bristles. This I did and they cleared the front path of our house, and the fronts of elderly and disabled people in the street where we lived.
This was all done by a nine-year-old and a 13-year-old, with no persuasion or request. It was initiative to do this. Times have changed for the worse, it seems.
