AN MP has joined calls urging Spurs to accept a £17m to redevelop its new stadium in Tottenham.

Andy Love, MP for Edmonton, urged the club to carefully consider the offer made last week by Haringey Council and Mayor of London Boris Johnson, and restated calls for the club to stay in north London.

He said: “I've always been of the opinion that Spurs should stay in Tottenham. It is its historic home, and there's something about being based in Tottenham.

“I hope this deal currently on the table will go a long way to persuading them that not only the community wants them to stay but local MPs, the Mayor of London, everyone is committed to making sure that Tottenham feel they are being treated fairly.

“I think £17m is not to be sniffed at. We know they are going to spend three, four, five hundred million pounds doing up the stadium, but I believe it will be good for Tottenham Hotspur FC if it locates itself where it has always been.”

The package would absolve the club of having to pay for improvements to the road and rail networks, as well as plumbing money into infrastructure to go alongside its new Northumberland Park stadium.

However, the club said it would be “irresponsible” to take a deal without ensuring the appropriate financial support and agreements in place.

Chairman Daniel Levy also pointed at falling land prices following the recent riots as another concern for the club.

Mr Johnson has reportedly set the club a three-week deadline on his offer, and stressed: “The club knows there is no more money available from the public purse.”
