An investigation has revealed the cause of the stench coming from London Waste's compost heap grass.

The heap's high and dense' grass content has been blamed for the sickly smell which has forced residents to keep their windows and doors shut in hot weather.

The cause of the smell was identified as part of an investigation led by Enfield Council, the Environment Agency, London Waste and Agrivert, the company which runs the composting depot.

A council spokesman said: "We have identified the main cause of the bad smells it was the way the waste was blended in late May and June, which had a very high grass content than previously experienced."

Enfield Council, which has statutory power over London Waste, has pledged to get tough with London Waste if the site continues to emit the stench.

However it seems the council is happy to let the compost heap take its natural course.

The council spokesman added: "Enfield Council believes the strength of the smell has died down in recent weeks.

"Once a full 12 month period is completed, seasonal trends will be more clearly understood to ensure in the future, correct mixing of waste happens in stages."

Resident Jane James said: "My view is they should shut the compost heap down now, and then discuss properly what measures should be taken.

"I couldn't get any sleep at the weekend because of the smell. I was forced to close my windows and my bedroom was like an oven."

More residents aired their views at a meeting attended by the Environment Agency and London Waste at Community House, Fore Street on Thursday.

London Waste has issued a dedicated phoneline at the plant for people to complain about the smell. Call 07875 384605.
