Detectives investigating the murder of a man who was gunned down in a pub have arrested four people.

The victim, named by sources as 23-year-old Mark Short, was shot in the Cotton Tree pub in Market Street, Droylsden, Greater Manchester, shortly before 11.50pm on Friday.

It is understood he was celebrating with family at a 60th birthday party and was shot by a lone gunman.

Greater Manchester Police said a 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

A 52-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder and possessing class A drugs and two other men, aged 21 and 18, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Detective Chief Inspector Denise Worth, of the Major Incident Team, said: "Mark was a young man who was tragically shot dead while in a pub with family and friends and our thoughts are with his loved ones who have, understandably, been left devastated.

"We remain in the very early stages of our investigation and I continue to appeal to anyone with information about the gunman, his accomplices or conspirators to contact us in absolute confidence.

"There continue to be extra police officers in the area so if anyone wants to provide information about this or has any concerns please come and talk to us."

A Home Office post mortem concluded Mark Short died from a gunshot wound to the neck.
